Laboratory Containment
Biosafety Cabinets
Ventilated enclosures for biological work, with protection determined by cabinet class and configuration. The range includes open-front cabinets and fully enclosed glovebox systems.

Features and configuration
Class I
Provides personnel and environmental protection through inward airflow and HEPA-filtered exhaust; does not provide product protection.
Class II
Combines inward airflow, filtered downflow and filtered exhaust to protect personnel, product and environment.
Class III
A gas-tight, negative-pressure enclosure with glove ports, filtered supply and dedicated filtered exhaust.
Typical specifications
| Nominal widths | 3, 4, 5 or 6 ft |
|---|---|
| Typical external depth | 760–860 mm |
| Typical height with stand | 2150–2400 mm |
| Working sash heights | 200, 250 or 300 mm |
| Typical lighting | 650–1000 lux |
| Typical noise | 65–67 dBA |
Applications
- Clinical laboratories
- Cell culture
- Microbiology
- Biological containment
Class I Cabinet Airflow
Inward airflow and filtered exhaust provide personnel and environmental protection.
Class II Cabinet Configurations
Class II variants differ in airflow routing and exhaust connection. Configuration should be selected to suit the biological work, chemical use and facility ventilation.
Features and configuration
Type A1
Typically 70% recirculation and 30% exhaust. The source lists a minimum inflow of 0.38 m/s.
Type A2
Typically 70% recirculation and 30% exhaust, with contaminated plenums under negative pressure or surrounded by negative-pressure plenums.
Type B1
Typically 30–40% recirculation and 60–70% exhaust. The rear work zone connects to dedicated external exhaust.
Type B2
Total-exhaust design with no internal recirculation and a dedicated hard-ducted external exhaust connection.
Typical specifications
| A1 exhaust | Room discharge or suitable canopy connection |
|---|---|
| A2 exhaust | Room discharge or suitable canopy connection |
| B1 and B2 exhaust | Dedicated hard-ducted external system |
| A2 B1 B2 minimum inflow | 0.51 m/s |
| Typical downflow | 0.25–0.35 m/s |
| Selection basis | Cabinet certification and application risk assessment |
Applications
- Select cabinet type together with exhaust arrangements and the intended process
Class II Type A1 Cabinet Airflow
Airflow routing, filtration and protection targets for the Type A1 configuration.
Class II Type A2 Cabinet Airflow
Airflow routing, filtration and protection targets for the Type A2 configuration.
Class II Type B1 Cabinet Airflow
Recirculating airflow and the dedicated external exhaust route for the Type B1 configuration.
Class II Type B2 Cabinet Airflow
Supply airflow and the dedicated external exhaust route for the total-exhaust Type B2 configuration.
Class III Cabinet Airflow
An enclosed glovebox arrangement with filtered supply and exhaust airflow.
